Best Rabbit Food

Rabbit Food - Featured Image

Having a rabbit can be really fun no matter what your age, but their food can be one of the most important things that you choose for them, especially if you are a first-time rabbit owner.

To give you an idea of which foods are the healthiest and why, here is a list of 5 of the best rabbit foods that you can get for your own Peter Cottontail today. We also answered some questions you may have about the food or feeding your rabbit.

Top 5: Rabbit Food Review

Sherwood Pet Health Rabbit Food-Adult, Timothy/Alfalfa Blend (Grain & Soy-Free) (Vet Used and Recommended) 10 lb.

This food is mostly an alfalfa blend that was made into pellets, and despite not looking colorful and different, it is actually one of the more preferred foods out there that your rabbit might enjoy.

You can get it in either a 4.5-pound bag or a 10-pound bag, and it is one of the few vet-recommended brands out there which is one of the reasons why it is more expensive than some of the other brands.

This is also one of the few pellets that have a little bit more calcium to make for calcium that may have been lost by eating a dry food mix.

Pros

  • Comes in two sizes.
  • Is vet recommended.
  • Has natural ingredients.

Cons

  • Is a little more expensive.
Oxbow Animal Health Bunny Basics Essentials Adult Rabbit Pet Food-10Lbs

This food is about the same as the last product, but it is different in a few ways including the size and ingredients. You can get this in 3 different sizes: 5, 10, and 25 pounds, making it one of the few foods to come in a larger size.

This is also a pellet-based food; there are no small grains or dried natural fruits that are whole and in the bag. Despite being just pellets, they do smell a little more earthy than some of the other foods, making them a little easier to find for your rabbit.

Although, the smell can be a bit much if you have a sensitive nose or you simply hate the smell; it is a little more common than you think. If that is the case, you could always put the food in a sealable container to contain the smells, like a leftover bin or a storage bin.

Pros

  • Comes in multiple sizes.
  • Is available for certain ages.
  • Has easy to read instructions.

Cons

  • Can smell a little strong.
F.M. Brown's Tropical Carnival Gourmet Pet Rabbit Food with High-Fiber Timothy and Alfalfa Hay Pellets, 10-lb Bag - Probiotics for Digestive Health, Vitamin-Nutrient Fortified Daily Diet

This is one of the more common bags that is a combination of natural and dried foods along with the regular pellets. Although, you might fight that your rabbit is a little picky when it comes to eating the pellets along with the rest of the food.

One way to fix this is by just leaving the pellets in their bowel until the next time you feed them. If your rabbit is hungry enough, they will eat the pellets, but you should not try to delay their normal feeding time to make them eat the pellets.

You could always store whatever leftover food there is with the remaining food and wait for the next chance they eat it again. If worst comes to worst, the food can be put into a bird feeder and is safe for some birds to eat, even the pellets.

You can get this bag in either a 5 or a 10-pound bag, and it contains a very wide range of fruits and vegetables.

Pros

  • Comes in two sizes.
  • Is made with natural ingredients.
  • Has a wide variety of ingredients.

Cons

  • The pellets can be unliked.
Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition Diet For Adult Rabbits, 8 Lbs

This food is a little similar to the last bag, but it has a little more pellets than the last one. It can also come in three different sizes: 4, 8, and 14 pounds. It is one of the more affordable bags, too.

The food has many healthy ingredients that are usually favored by the adults and even senior rabbits, but younger ones tend to be a little more picky with this kind, especially with the corn which can be a little too big and unsettling for them.

Beyond that, it is one of the more popular bags that you can get in a larger size for a pretty decent price.

Pros

  • Comes in multiple sizes.
  • Is affordable.
  • Is ideal for adult rabbits.

Cons

  • Corn can be too big.
Supreme Petfoods Tiny Friends Farm Russel Rabbit Food, 6 lb

This bag is the only one that comes in a single size: 6 pounds. The ingredients are about the same as the last bag, but these do not contain any pellets whatsoever. Despite this, some younger rabbits and even older ones can still be a little picky with certain parts.

Still, it is nearly a completely natural formula that has no sugars, too, and it even comes with instructions on the back of the bag that show you how to feed your rabbit based on their species.

Pros

  • Is ideal for rabbits of all sizes.
  • Is affordable.
  • Has natural ingredients.

Cons

  • Can be a bit picky with some parts.

Top Pick

There are several great foods on this list, but the one that won the title for the best of them all would have to be the first on the list: the Sherwood Pet Health Adult Rabbit Food - Alfalfa/Timothy Blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Rabbit Food Should You Give Your Rabbit and How Often?

A good rule of thumb is to follow the instructions on the bag unless your rabbit has specific feeding needs. Some bags contain more fillers or treats than others, making the rabbit want to eat more or less often depending on the ingredients.

The portion recommendations and instructions take the ingredients into account so that you do not have to think about experimenting with measurements to see how much food your rabbit should be getting each day.

What Are the Best and Worst Ingredients in Rabbit Food?

Most foods come with pretty basic and simple ingredients like vegetables, grains, and hay/leaves. Some of the best and most favored ones are grass-based, especially if they contain alfalfa.

Most of these are either in a pellet shape, like product 2, or their natural shape, like product five, but there a few out there that are a combination of both; pellet and natural shape.

The foods that are less helpful and sometimes more harmful are the ones that have any sugar or artificial ingredients at all. Even in small amounts, these can put physical stress and strain on your rabbit by upsetting their stomach, causing digestive issues, and even making them sick or worse.

It can be a little expensive and harder to find, but there are a few foods out there that are sugar and artificial-free.

What Size Bag Should You Get?

If you have one or more rabbits or you like to stock up on food, a larger sized bag can be a better option. You can usually find most bags in 4, 5, 8, 10, or 15 pounds, but there are a few out there that are even bigger.

To give you an idea of how long a single bag can last for, a 4 or 5-pound bag can last for around 2 weeks for a single rabbit if you are not giving them fresh fruits or veggies. If you feed them fresh foods often, then it can last you as long as a month.

Final Verdict

It is one of the few foods that is one of the universally-like across several ages and species of rabbits. If you think it is something your rabbit would enjoy, click on the link to see how much it is. You can also click on the other links to compare them side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Put Hay in My Rabbits Litter Box?

Yes. Hay is actually recommended for your to put into the litter box, since rabbits prefer hay, and having hay in the box can help encourage your rabbit to use the box more.

Having hay in your rabbit’s litter box is also recommended because it helps to make sure that your rabbit is comfortable while they’re using the litter box. Not only are you recommended to put hay in your rabbit’s box, but you should also put other litter materials in there as well.

How Do I Get My Rabbit to Poop in the Litter Box?

If you’re having trouble getting your rabbit to dispose of their waste inside of the litter box, then there are a few things that you can do in order to encourage them to use the box more frequently. For instance, you may find it helpful if you keep the box clean.

You should make sure that the box remains clean all of the time because rabbits are clean animals, so having a dirty box can decrease the chances of them wanting to use the box frequently. Additionally, you should make sure that the box smells good, which you can do by thoroughly cleaning the box at least once a week and regularly changing the litter material that you place inside of the box.

Lastly, since rabbits are habitual animals, you should get your rabbit to use the box frequently so that they get into the habit of only disposing of their waste inside the box. You can do this by maybe giving them a treat and rewarding them every time that they use the box (2).

Why Does My Rabbit Poop Outside the Litter Box?

There can generally be a few reasons why a rabbit may not poop inside of their litter box and instead, they use the box for peeing or other purposes. Most rabbits are known to poop outside of their box instead of inside the litter box because they use the litter box as a place for relaxing and lounging instead of for relieving themselves.

In order to solve this problem, you can introduce a different place for lounging and enforce that new, comfortable location to them instead of the litter box. That way, they just may choose to use the litter box for its traditional purposes finally.

They may also choose to use the litter box that you setup for them in addition to another corner or specific place in the room as well. If that’s the case, then you may want to consider setting up multiple different litter boxes for your rabbits.

Other than these reasons, your rabbit may simply be accidentally pooping outside of the box or accidentally flicking the poop outside of the box. In that case, you may find it beneficial to have a larger opening for the litter box to make it easier for them to enter. Other than that, using a plastic urine and waste guard may be beneficial, since it can keep all of the waste inside of the litter box (3).

Final Verdict

Furthermore, this litter box feathers a cross-fixed design that can prevent your rabbit from trying to move the box and play with it. It’s also suitable for smaller animals other than just rabbits. Given these beneficial features, you’re most recommended to purchase the RUBYHOME Rabbit Litter Box Toilet Trainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you need a few answers or quick tips, here are some additional things to consider or learn!

Do Rabbits Enjoy Multi-Level Cages?

This is greatly dependent on the personality of your rabbit. More active rabbits may enjoy a multi-level cage whereas a calmer rabbit does not benefit one way or another. If your bunny is rather active and in need of energy-burning, getting a multi-level cage may be a great way to promote healthy exercise and something fun to do!

Is It Bad to Keep Your Bunny in a Cage?

Keeping any animal locked in a cage continuously is not beneficial to the animal. It is essential that you allow your bunny free time to roam and explore. You can do this confined in a room or you can even buy a playpen to let them run around. In any regard, it is best to use the cage as a home for eating and sleeping but don't forget to let them out to hop around regularly.

How Big Should Your Rabbit's Cage Be?

This will depend on the size of your rabbit and how many rabbits you have. Of course, the more space, the better. But the general rule of thumb is that the cage needs to be at least four times the size of your bunny. This will give them plenty of space without restricting them.

What Do You Put down as Bedding?

There are many bedding choices for bunnies. In indoor cages, you can buy wood shavings, recycled crumpled paper, pelleted straw, hemp, and fleece bedding. In an outdoor cage, the bottom of some may be wired to have droppings fall into a tray.

This type would no require the rabbit to need additional bedding. However, having a soft bed or cozy spot is always a great addition to any home space for them!
